Welcome to the May edition of the Irish Universities Association Bulletin! This month, we’re bringing you exciting updates on our latest projects, including our Future of Ireland event and an Irish Times opinion piece from IUA Chair Prof Eeva Leinonen. Plus, we spotlight a pan European event on the future of the European Universities Alliances.

Minister James Lawless shares his vision for the future of higher education and research.

On May 12th at the IUA Future of Ireland event – Shaping the Future of Higher Education & Research – Minister James Lawless T.D., Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, outlined his priorities and plans for the future of higher education and research in Ireland. In his speech, Minister James Lawless defined his vision for the future of Higher Education in Ireland.

In an opinion column for the Irish Times on May 19th Prof Eeva Leinonen outlined how Ireland can be a world leader in scientific breakthrough if the right conditions are in place. Prof Leinonen backs the IUA call for a new 5yr €600m funding programme to deliver upgrades to outdated research equipment, new technology enterprise hubs that support collaboration between research institutions and the recruitment of up to 600 extra PhD students. She calls for greater investment in university research leading to a more innovative and competitive economy.

Ireland, France and Germany Reaffirm Universities’ Role in strengthening EU wide collaboration through European University Alliances – May 27th

On 27 May in Europe House Dublin a pan-European conference highlighted the deep cross-national collaboration with Irish, French and German partners in shaping a more integrated, competitive, and inclusive European Higher Education Area. To date the Irish government, through the HEA has allocated over €10.35million to support participation by 14 Irish higher education institutions.

The event included contributions from Minister James Lawless, H.E. Céline Place, French Ambassador to Ireland and H.E. David Gill, German Ambassador to Ireland. READ THE EVENT PRESS RELEASE
