A Year of Purpose and Progress

Paul Johnston, Director General, Irish Universities Association

I took up the role of Director General of the Irish Universities Association on 3 November, towards the close of a year that has been both consequential and energising for Ireland’s universities. It has been a privilege to step into this role at a moment when higher education and research are so clearly recognised as central to Ireland’s future – and to follow a year of strong leadership by IUA Council with Professor Eeva Leinonen of Maynooth University as IUA Chair.

Throughout 2025, the IUA has articulated a consistent and clear message to Government, political and business leaders and the wider public: that sustained investment in people, knowledge and innovation is not only optional, but essential.

The announcements by government this year, not least the exciting new INSPIRE programme launched in November, are hugely welcome and important. They will help our universities play the role we need them to play in shaping the future.

In a period marked by geopolitical uncertainty, economic transition and accelerating technological change, Ireland’s universities have a central part to play in the national innovation and transformation efforts needed to keep this great country in pole position internationally. That requires sustained investment and support, now more than ever.

As Director General, I know that I have joined the IUA at a moment of both opportunity and responsibility.

Looking to 2026 and beyond, my priority is to build on the strong foundations laid this year: to ensure Ireland’s universities continue to have a clear, credible and influential voice; to work constructively with Government, policymakers and partners across Irish society and beyond; and to help secure and sustain a higher education and research system that is well funded, globally connected and nationally impactful.

As we approach Christmas, we would like to thank our partners across higher education, government and enterprise for their engagement, support and shared commitment throughout 2025. The year has demonstrated what can be achieved when ambition is matched by partnership. I look forward to continuing that work together in the year ahead.

On behalf of the IUA Team I would like to wish you a very happy Christmas.
