Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, remotely presented about “University Research and Education as Anchors of Europe’s Future” in which she looked at the contrast and complementarity of European and National Research priorities.

Responding on national priorities was Dr. Deirdre Lillis, Assistant Secretary General, DFHERIS. 

Deirdre was joined by panellists Dr Ciaran Seoighe, Deputy Director General of Science Foundation Ireland, Professor John Doyle, VP for Research DCU and Prof Emma Teeling UCD. 

Science Writer and Journalist Dr Claire O’Connell was panel chair.

Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner

Iliana Ivanova is the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. She previously served as Member of the European Court of Auditors (2013 – 2023), as Member of the European Parliament (2009 – 2012) and as a Member of Sofia City Council (2007 – 2009). She has also worked as Investment and business analyst in various financial and banking institutions in US as well as coordinator for International financial institutions in the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Dr Deirdre Lillis, DFHERIS

Dr Deirdre Lillis, Assistant Secretary General, Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science

Dr. Deirdre Lillis has responsibility for the Research, Innovation, Evidence for Policy and EU/International Division of DFHERIS.  A proven senior executive, her prior experience includes university leadership roles in university-enterprise engagement in TU Dublin and as Head of Computer Science in DIT. She has a track record of research capacity building and transformation in higher education including principal investigator for an unprecedented national investment of €17.5m in university-enterprise engagement (www.convene.ie), the €4m global HubLinked Knowledge Alliance (www.hublinked.ie) and Marie-Curie RISE GETM3 Global Entrepreneurial Talent Management programme.  Her research interests include national research and innovation systems, higher education policy, university-industry innovations and young talent management.
