NUI Galway / University of Limerick Strategic Alliance

IUA STATEMENT
A significant new strategic alliance between NUI Galway and the University of Limerick was launched today. The launch took place in the Royal Irish Academy with an impressive line up of speakers – An Taoiseach Mr Brian Cowen TD, An Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Mary Coughlan TD, Minister for Education and Science, Mr Batt O Keefe TD, and the Presidents of UL, Professor Don Barry and NUIG, Professor Jim Browne.
IUA CEO, Ned Costello acted as MC for the event. In his introductory remarks he said: “among all the members of the IUA we are very conscious of the need to innovate and to ensure that the resources available to us make the maximum impact. This is important in teaching and learning, in research, and in knowledge transfer and commercialisation. The alliance touches on all of these fields.”
The IUA welcomes the alliance as an further example of inter institutional cooperation and initiative on the part of the universities in responding to the evolving economic and social landscape. “We are very encouraged by the positive support expressed by the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Minister both for this collaboration and for the work of the universities generally in research, commercialisation and advancing teaching and learning”, Costello said.
