WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF IUA – JOHN HEGARTY
2007 was a very active year for my Presidency of the IUA Council. We began by welcoming Ned Costello who took over as IUA Chief Executive at the beginning of the year. We said goodbye to Presidents Gerry Wrixon (UCC) and John O’Connor (UL) and welcomed respective incoming presidents Michael Murphy and Don Barry. My presidency year was marked out by a focus on two key issues - Strategy and SIF. With the support of the IUA executive, we began a process of identifying key strategic issues centred on the premise that the optimisation of the relationships between research, teaching and learning, and knowledge transfer will be critical to the future of the university system. We also made concerted efforts to ensure that the need to better support the development of the universities registers more strongly in the public and political consciousness. In regard to research, PRTLI Cycle IV was a highlight, and a positive indication that Government is making good on its commitments under the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation. We now await a positive outcome to our sectoral bid for Cycle II of the Strategic Innovation Fund which will enable greater collaboration across the entire Higher Education sector in 2008.
My best wishes for a peaceful and happy Christmas break,
Dr. John Hegarty, President of IUA, 2007 |

| Ned Costello: My First Year as CEO of IUA |

The Christmas edition of our newsletter also signals the end of my first year at IUA, and it has certainly been an exciting one. As I reflect on the year, what strikes me most is the scale and complexity of today’s modern university. Coming to terms with that complexity has proved to be a fascinating learning experience and one which I know will continue.

| Irish Universities Agree MOU with China Scholarship Council |
 |
A memorandum of understanding has been agreed between IUA and the China Scholarship Council, through the good offices of the Irish Embassy in China, for the exchange of PhD students between Ireland and China. This pilot project is designed to assist with the development of long term strategic research links with prestige Chinese partners, as part of the broader overall positioning of Irish research and 4th level activities at international level.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
2007 was a busy year with many of the SIF projects getting underway. We are currently developing a website for 4th Level Ireland and have just launched a review brochure for the Marie Curie programme "Attracting Talented Researchers to Ireland" - a copy of which can be downloaded from this newsletter.
I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome two new communications managers to the Higher Education Sector. Deirdre Watters joined NUI Maynooth during the summer and Malcolm Byrne took up the position of Communications Manager for the HEA in November. I look forward to working with both of them in 2008.
