Equality Photography Competition

On October 11th 2007, an inter-varsity photography competition for staff and students of the seven universities in Ireland was launched to celebrate the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All 2007. The theme is "Changing Perspectives: Equality and Diversity in my University".

The photography competition, which has the support of the IUA Council, has been organised by the Equality personnel and Students Union's in all seven universities to contribute towards the aims of the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All by increasing awareness amongst the Irish university population of approximately 16,375 staff and 96,637 students about the equality/diversity of staff and students in universities in Ireland.

Prize money has been provided by each of the seven universities and a calendar featuring the top 12 images, funded by the Equality Authority, will be produced and distributed to all universities in December 07. The calendar would not have been possible without the funding provided by the Equality Authority.

It is obvious from the photos that have been submitted for the competition that the majority of entrants thought of race as the focus of diversity. The competition has highlighted the need for additional information and awareness campaigns to create awareness of the other 8 grounds covered by Equality Legislation.

Congratulations to the winners...
