IUA News
WELCOME TO THE 2nd EDITION OF IUA e- NEWS

In this second issue we discuss what the allocation of over €42 million will mean to the universities and other third level institutions across the country under the Government's Strategic Innovation Fund for higher education. The €42 million awards are the first cycle of funding from the €300 million five year fund established by the Government and are a very welcome source of funding for universities. We look forward to the fruits of collaboration between higher education institutions that this funding will encourage. We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Ned Costello as new Chief Executive of the IUA who will take up the position in early January. Finally, on my own behalf, and on behalf of all my colleagues in the IUA, I want to express our thanks and appreciation to outgoing Chief Executive Michael McGrath for the great work done during his ten years as Director of the IUA. As quoted in the Irish Times recently, Michael “is seen as a key figure who helped to convince the Government of much greater investment in third and fourth level.” He has achieved much more besides, all of us very much enjoyed working with him, appreciated both his invaluable insights and his warm and engaging personality and wish him well in his retirement.

My best wishes for a peaceful and happy Christmas break,
Dr. Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, President of IUA, 2006
