WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF IUA – JOHN HEGARTY
Welcome to the third issue of the IUA newsletter and my first as President of the Association. Since the New Year there have been many developments at the IUA. The Association's new Chief Executive, Ned Costello, took up his position in mid January and has been busy meeting and forging additional fruitful relationships with key education and industry figures. On behalf of the other Presidents and myself, I'd like to welcome Ned on board and wish him much success in his important role at the IUA. We are very fortunate to have him. Further appointments have been made which will see the IUA staff number increase by two by the end of May. A new Marie Curie National Contact Point and a 4th Level Network Coordinator will soon be added to the team. January also saw the retirement reception for our esteemed colleague and former Director of the IUA, Michael McGrath. Many friends and colleagues joined me on January 29th to pay tribute to the man who ably led the IUA for the last 10 years. Photographs from the event can be seen in this newsletter.
2007 will be an exciting year for the universities: significant projects under the first cycle of the Strategic Innovation Fund are now getting underway and planning for the next call due in May/June is also well advanced. The implementation of the government's Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation is also progressing and is reflected in the call for proposals for Cycle Four of the PRTLI.
All of these positive developments will significantly strengthen the university system, but much remains to be done. In my year as President of the IUA Council I look forward to working with colleagues to further develop our strategy , building on the significant achievements of the universities, and addressing the challenges which lie ahead as we support Ireland's drive to become a knowledge society.

Its been a fascinating time getting to know people and immersing myself in the mix of challenges and opportunities facing the University sector.
