Calling all PRTLI funded projects, researchers and institutions, past and present....

This year, the Higher Education Authority will launch a series of exciting and innovative events celebrating ten years of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI). We are delighted to invite researchers, projects and institutions that have been funded under the PRTLI to participate in this celebration of success, growth and development in the Irish research community.

The launch of the programme in 1998 radically altered the research landscape in Ireland and marked the introduction of a unique and innovative approach to enhancing research and education capability for the Irish academic community. To date in excess of €865 million has been allocated under the programme.

Over 2008/09 a series of celebratory events will take place to showcase and acknowledge the remarkable portfolio of research that has been funded under the programme. It is anticipated that these events will involve the co-operation of all institutions that have received funding under the PRTLI since its inception.

The centre piece of the anniversary celebrations will be the launch of a commemorative book, on the 27th November. The book will be a visual and textual showcase of some of the most exciting PRTLI funded research underway in Ireland. The book launch will open a ten day exhibition and ‘festival of research’ in the Science Gallery, based in Trinity College Dublin, with exhibitions continuing to December 6th.

We now invite interested applicants who have benefited under the PRTLI, both past and present, to participate in our ‘festival of research’ in November. We are looking for proposals of the highest standard based around PRTLI funded research and projects that incorporate art, science and new technology in an exciting and engaging manner. Exhibits should appeal to the general public by offering opportunities to experience research first hand – with interactive presentations and workshops. These could be computer based or involve paper and pen! Fresh and innovative concepts that investigate a variety of themes are very welcome.

As well as stations and interactive exhibitions presenting the research, we are encouraging research centred workshops to engage members of the public, students and fellow researchers.

While we appreciate the relatively tight timeframe involved in the run-up to the event in November, we would encourage all interested applicants to get involved in this landmark celebration of success in the research community.

We are currently proposing to divide the exhibition space into a series of research zones (health, environment, technology, sport, arts, etc). The number and type of zones will remain flexible in accordance with the kind of applications that we receive but we hope to create an exhibition which demonstrates the wide impact of the PRTLI.

We intend to offer up to €3,000 per exhibit (or workshop where relevant) to include station/exhibition design and construction, as well as shipping, travel, lodging, meals, etc if applicable. Projects that have lower financial requirements, or that bring their own funding, will be favourably received. Additional funding may be available for exceptional projects. Clear budget outline and timeline are essential to your successful submission.

An expression of interest application form can be downloaded here. Entry submissions with completed EOI and relevant documentation should be sent by email only to: Mark Byrne, Communications Officer, HEA, markbyrne@hea.ie (Tel: 01 2317 178).
