The awards are intended to raise the profile of teaching and learning through recognition and celebration of teachers who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience.

The National Awards for Excellence in Teaching aim to acknowledge and reward academic staff who are successful in uniting their dual roles as teacher and researcher. The awards are intended to recognise teaching accomplishments and to promote public recognition and celebration of the teaching profession.

Director of NAIRTL, Professor Grace Neville closed the proceedings and invited nominations for the 2009 National Awards Programme. Five awards of €5,000 each will be made in 2009. Nominations were invited from all Higher Education Institutions that are recognised by the HEA for the free fees initiative. The awards will recognise and celebrate teachers in higher education who have demonstrated excellence and commitment in integrating their research with their teaching to enhance the student learning experience.
