Marie Curie - Case Studies

Success Stories

The Irish Universities Association is the National Contact Point for the Marie Curie Programme. The office has supported researchers in bringing in over 60m since 2002 which is equivalent to  a success over three times the average.

Here we present a selection of success stories from researchers funded during the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) in highly diverse disciplines within academia and industry. These stories demonstrate the hugely positive impact the Marie Curie funding has had on research in Ireland.

Institute for Molecular Medicine, Trinity College Dublin - Dr Dermot Kelleher
"We believe that this programme has the potential to have a very significant impact on Irish research science"

Microbiology Department, NUI Galway - Dr Aoife Boyd
"The acquisition of key research strengths will lead to a novel, high-impact research output by the Human Pathogen cluster and enable us to compete at an international level in the field of host-pathogen interaction research"

NTERA, Dublin - Dave Corr, Chief Technology Officer
"Marie-Curie funding fulfils a direct need that most organisations that engage in R&D have - the access to expert knowledge and additional, relevant headcount."

Laboratory for Biomedical Data Mining, NUI Galway - Dr Michael Madden
"The project will enhance our interactions with other European research institutes, and help promote research as a profession. "

EiRx Therapeutics, Cork - Finbarr Murphy, Managing Director
"For EiRx, the impact of winning the Marie Curie award has been profound. The integration of new scientific disciplines into the company, has broadened the company's skill base."

Environmental Change Institute, NUI Galway - Prof John Simmie
"Success in Marie Curie schemes is beneficial far beyond the purely financial; it validates your research group as one of the leaders in Europe and essentially puts you on the world map."

Aughinish Alumina, Limerick - Martin Fennell, Managing Director
"To stay competitive in the world of alumina we saw a need to accelerate research and expand the capabilities of our technical people."

Biology Department, NUI Maynooth - Dr Shirley O'Dea
"The recruited researchers will be involved in teaching under-graduate and post-graduate students who will benefit greatly from the opportunity to learn about state-of-the-art technologies."
