The University of Limerick (UL) was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick and constituted as the University of Limerick in 1989. Situated in the mid-west region of Ireland, the University of Limerick is an autonomous, internationally focused university with over 11,500 students and 1,200 staff. It is a young, energetic and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship.
The University's mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge through teaching, research and scholarship in an environment which encourages innovation and upholds the principles of free enquiry and expression. Particular attention is paid to the generation of knowledge which is relevant to the needs of Ireland's continuing socio-economic development. UL offers a range of programmes up to doctorate and post-doctorate levels in the disciplines of Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Informatics & Electronics, Science and Health Science.
UL has a superb campus of over 131 hectares with outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities which enhance this exceptional learning and working environment. The campus is located 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport. Adjacent to the University is the National Technology Park (NTP), Ireland's first science/technology park which is home to over 80 organisations.
In supporting the link between teaching and research, and between undergraduate and graduate education, and offering the traditional PhD model, the University is developing new doctoral degree programmes, which include taught elements in the early stages, as well as an in-depth research training in the student's field of research and related disciplines. In recognizing that many doctoral graduates will pursue careers outside of academia, the University provides additional transferable and professional skills training for research students.
The main areas of research in the University include software research; bioengineering; materials science; work quality and productivity; social science; environmental science and biosciences. The University boasts three international-level research institutes and over 30 research centres. UL has an established reputation for working with industry, through one of the largest cooperative education programmes in Europe, and through its many research projects with industry. UL looks forward to developing further links at graduate level, through placements in industry, co-funding arrangements, and stronger industry-University partnerships. UL aims to build on existing links with other educational institutions, both in Ireland and overseas to provide the best possible educational experience for all of its graduates.
