University College Cork (UCC) was founded in 1845 and is one of Ireland's oldest universities. Situated in Cork (www.cometocork.com), Ireland's second city, UCC plays an important role in the economic, social and cultural life of the country as a whole. Ireland's leading research university, UCC has the highest level of peer-reviewed research grants in the State. The award of the title "Irish University of the Year" for 2003-04 and 2005-06 recognizes the excellence of its academic programmes, high-quality research reputation, its superb infrastructure, and its role as a cosmopolitan university.
University College Cork has over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, up to PhD level, and plans a major expansion of PhD numbers. The university's teaching and research programmes are offered across four Colleges: Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences; Business and Law; Science, Engineering and Food Science and Medicine and Health.
UCC has a clear commitment to excellence in both research and teaching. Such major national campus-based research centers of excellence as the Tyndall National Institute, the Boole Centre for Research in Informatics, the BioSciences Institute and the Environmental Research Institute support the University's research interests, and UCC also has a strong research record in the Humanities, with an international reputation in the field of Irish Studies. The institution's commitment to assuring a high-quality graduate educational experience is reflected in ongoing investment in facilities for such study, including the provision of a new graduate research library, and a growing suite of skills development modules.
UCC's active intellectual climate in recent years has attracted distinguished national and international scholars and researchers to join an already prestigious assembly of well-known faculty. The university also provides a special academic opportunity for graduate students through engaging faculty, students and facilities across the boundaries of traditional disciplines.
Today, UCC has around 2000 international students, from all five continents, and is committed to increasing the percentage of international students enrolled, particularly in graduate programmes.
