Founded in 1845, National University of Ireland, Galway has a distinguished record in research and scholarship. Currently there are over 15,000 students attending the University, of whom 12,000 are full-time. 50 countries are represented among the 1,500 international students on campus.
Galway City, with a population of 80,000, is located on the west coast of Ireland and is one of the fastest developing cities in Europe. The city is a centre of the arts and commerce and has a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The university is located close to the centre of Galway and the combination of city and university provides a quality 'student experience'.
NUI Galway is committed to the development of a dynamic research culture built on its distinctive expertise. To this end it has identified key areas of scholarship and research across the sciences, business, social sciences and humanities in which it is developing internationally recognised quality research programmes .In each of these areas it has consistently attracted significant research funding under national and European research programmes and from private sources.
The research environment at NUI Galway is strongly interdisciplinary and built on shared themes in which the university has particular strengths. Research programmes are built on the university's particular competencies and have been developed in the context of national social, cultural and economic policy. The programmes are lead by academics and researchers with international research reputations and experience. They are conducted in collaboration with other universities in Ireland and overseas and with multi-national industrial partners.
The University provides programmes to PhD level across its seven Faculties of Arts, Celtic Studies, Medicine & Health Sciences, Commerce, Engineering, Law and Science. Within those Faculties it has identified priority themes, built on the expertise of its staff and success in attracting research funding. These are

- Terrestrial and marine environment and energy
- Information and communication technology
- Physical and mathematical sciences
- Humanities including Irish Studies
- Applied social sciences and public health
