The IUA Groups discuss and pursue policy issues and actions under specific thematic headings.
The five Standing Groups are:
- The Registrars' Group
- The Vice Presidents/Deans of Research Group
- The Chief Financial Officers' Group (UCFOG)
- The HR Directors' Group
- The Secretaries' Group
Plenary meetings of members of these groups are held a mimimum of four times a year and many groups meet monthly.
Chairmanship of the Standing Groups rotates between the universities in line with IUA Chairmanship.
Within the IUA framework a large number of expert groups facilitate inter-university co-operation on important specialised areas. These include:
- Access Managers Group
- Communications Officers Group
- Deans of Graduate Studies Group
- Finance Managers Group
- International Officers Group
- Librarians Group
- Procurement Officers Group
- Research Officers Group
